The good news is it is possible to rise up the Google rankings and generate business from the web, it just requires a little more effort and thought.

To get clients to your website you have got to find the keywords that you possible customers are using to search in Google. These keywords have to have 1 or 2 traits; they must be:

Business important
Generate Serious Traffic
Low in Competition

So though you may think the best keyword for a wedding photographer to aim at would be "wedding photography", if we apply the above rules we'll see that there is far too much competition to succeed here and it could take years (if at all) before you are able to rank well for this term. Miles better to find a long term which is still applicable but has a smaller market. If the photographer works in the south of Britain then the term "Wedding Photographer London" could be a lot easier.

The website can then be designed with this in mind and other articles will go into the details in more depth. Once the site is built it will need content in the shape of articles and photographs all relevant to the focused keyword. When this is done the site should be promoted using off-site methods to build links from other sites (Blogs, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook) which may increase it's visibility to Google.

Analytic software such as Google Analysis should be installed from the first day to trace the progress and permit the method to be modified based mostly on results. The entire process may take many months to generate results, but the ultimate result is actually worth the effort.

The simplest way to Make A Perfect Portrait By Using A Balance Of Natural Light And Flash

Many newbie photographers have real problem when it comes to utilizing flash outside to create a subtle 'fill-in ' flash effect. The most common mistake is by utilising too much power in the flash which could suppress the natural light and produce a particularly synthesised look to the photograph. If you leave your camera on program mode the inclination of the on-camera exposure meter is to see the scene as 'dark ' and set the flash to high power with a fast shutter speed and medium sized aperture. The result may be acceptable as a party snapshot but is not satisfactory for a professional portrait.

There are many things of importance here and it's possible put together a straightforward step by step guide which will allow anyone to form stunning portraits.

The first thing to recognise is that there are 2 elements in the image which are receiving light from 2 different light sources. The 1st is the background which is lit from background light. This may be sunlight outside or possible artificial light from within a room. The second part is your subject which, being nearer to you, will receive some illumination from the background light but most light will come from the flashgun. Both these elements have to be considered independently for a good picture to be created.

We will make the assumption that the flash gun is positioned 'off-camera ', though this is not a prerequisite for this technique to work.

First things first we want to set the exposure for the background. Make sure that the flash gun is turned off and use your manual exposure reading to create an exposure to supply a pleasing background effect. This may involve increasing the ISO setting, lowering the shutter speed and employing a larger aperture to permit more light into the camera.

Second turn the flash on and set it to manual. Experiment with different settings till subject is properly exposed.

In this manner you are using 2 different light sources and techniques of control. The camera exposure is being set for the background and the flash for the foreground.

With a little experimentation you will be producing wonderful exposures that any professional wedding photographer would be proud of.

Simon McKay and Rani Shillam were married on 23/05/2009 at Hammersmith & Fulham Register Office.

Rani and Simon had a no-fuss wedding, inspired by urban seventies style. "We wanted a low key wedding which would reflect our lifestyle," says Simon. "Rani wore an original 1960s turquoise crochet dress from One of a Kind on Portobello Road and I wore a bespoke tuxedo which was made for my father in 1973."

The pair took double decker buses to the registry office where they had an intimate ceremony with 15 guests. Afterwards, black cabs were hailed to transport guests to the Blah Blah Blah restaurant.

Seating arrangements on the day were a concern for the couple. "A number of people hadn't met before and Simon's parents hadn't seen one another for 32 years," recalls Rani. "Perhaps it was the small scale of the wedding, but the event's intimate nature meant the integration of our families actually proved to be one of the biggest successes of the day."

Wedding Photography: A Backup Strategy for the Wedding Photographer

A typical wedding may involve thousands of photographs. These precious images may be taken by a number of different photographers over several days. Often they involve the coverage of pre-wedding parties and events and may involve the work of several different wedding photographers working together or in different physical locations.

The images are large. When a modern digital SLR camera captures an image in RAW format each file could be 20MB or larger. At a large Asian wedding, it is not untypical to have 30 GB or more of images to backup and then process. When dealing with such a volume of data it is important that all of the wedding photographers associated with the event work to the same system so that the possibility of error is reduced. There are a number of rules that must be followed.

1. Always use the very best quality memory cards. Don’t think you can save money by buying cheap cards, it will cause you lots of problems.

2. Buy large format cards 8GB or 16GB CF memory cards. This will reduce the number of times that you need to swap cards, which cuts down on the possibility of a dropped or lost card.

3. Format all of the cards in the camera that they will be used. Sometimes errors occur when a card is formatted in one camera and then used in another.

4. Format the cards before you leave for the wedding.

5. Always have many more cards than you think you will need.

6. Write you studio name on each card

7. Write a unique number on each card. Write down which cards you take to a wedding, which photographer has which one and check them all at the end of the day to make sure none are missing.

8. Never (never ever) format a card on site at the wedding. On a busy day you may make a mistake and format a card containing hundreds of images.

During the wedding:

· When a card is full (or nearly full) remove it from the camera, place it in a protective case (the one that comes with it when new) and place it together with the other full cards inside a Ziploc bag.

· Keep this bag of cards in a zipped pocket with you at all times.

· Never put a card in a pocket on its own while you take an ‘important’ shot. Put the old card away safely first.

· At the end of the wedding take any cards still in the cameras and place them together in the zip bag with the others.

Back at the studio / home

· Take each card from the bag, one at a time and copy all the images from each card onto a separate directory on an external backup hard disk.

· Each subdirectory should be given the same name as the unique number assigned to each memory card.

· The parent directory name should contain the date of the event and the client name ie “20100823-JaneSmith”

When all of the cards have been copied then you have one backup set of your images and you can feel a little safer.

Convert RAW files to DNG

Different camera models produce different types of RAW files and it can be confusing to have multiple file formats. Run the Adobe DNG converter on all of the RAW images and have the new files copied to a client directory on the internal hard disk of your computer. When this process is complete you will have two backup copies of the files.

· Do not load the files into any editing program, do not modify them yet – you have not finished the back up process.

· Make 2 complete sets of DVDs of all of the images in DNG format. Use a professional backup program that verifies each disk after it has been written.

· On the disk write the name of the client, the date of the event and the backup program used to make the backup.

· Put one of the sets in a cool, dry safe location for storage.

· Give the second set of disks to a colleague, friend, or family member who can store the images in a different house – it is important that you have a safe backup set offsite.

When all of this has been done you can safely format the CF cards and re-use them for another job and you can feel confident that the client files are safe. Remember to take backups of any work that you do on these files and to archive them to two sets of disks when the job is complete.

Hiring independent photographers for each side of the family

I thought that it might be worth talking a little about our own experience with this. It is still reasonably common for each side of the family to hire their own photographer and there is a considerable advantage to having two person coverage due to the complexity of many of the ceremonies and the fact that many events happen in different locations at the same time. One person is never enough to cover everything. However, in our experience there is a lot to be gained if both photographers are from the same company are highly experienced and familiar with each other. This is rarely the case as the majority of photographers are either independent or work with a junior assistant; this does not work well for an Asian wedding where there is a need for two professional, experienced photographers.

Ray and Clwyd are both extremely experienced and have been independent professionals for many years. We each cover a different area of the country and come together to work together on large wedding as a team.

When two photographers from different companies have to work together there is always more work involved for the bridal couple and guests. This is because the work load cannot be shared. The photographers do not know the skills or ability of the other and therefore cannot presume that any one photograph, groups shot or event has been covered correctly and therefore everything needs to be duplicated. This can be particularly tiresome for the couple when portraits and groups are involved, resulting in fewer unique shots, more standing around and less choice. As you know, an Asian wedding is always running short of time, so time wasted duplicating photographs is never a good thing.

When photographs from the same company work together they can share their resources, coving different events which may be happening with the bride and groom in different locations and having more time to cover friends and relatives. They can also use different lenses and techniques resulting in a wider selection of images for the final album – overall a much higher quality of final product is produced and with much less stress involved.

In terms of our own experience, I would say that the majority of weddings we cover are Asian (approx. 70%). Clwyd’s wife is Sikh and he was married in a Gurdwara in Coventry over 14 years ago, so we are all very familiar both with the ceremonies and customs involved. We have also run master classes on Asian wedding photography – teaching other professionals about the complexities and details involved and many of our weddings have been published in the bridal magazines and newspapers.

We have been asked many times if we can provide video coverage for a wedding. We have always said no, prefering to concentrate at what we are good at. Wedding videography is a very specialist skill and there are few companies in the market who can do it well.

However it is understandable that a bride and groom want their videographer and photographer to work well together. So it makes a lot of sense for us to recommend wedding videographers who we haev worked with in the past and whose work we would be proud to have created ourselves. Pixcellence (Ray & Clwyd) are off to the NEC in Birmingham this weekend for the annual FOCUS photographic show. A great way to spend a couple of days looking at the latest kit, talking with partners and suppliers and generally meeting up with people in the industry.

Nothing spectacular is expected, but we always manage to pick up something interesting and spend too much money. Last year it was the new 24-70 f2.8 lens from Nikon which is really excellent.

Winter weddings

We just finished shooting a wedding on Saturday at the Manor of Groves, Sawbridgeworth in Herts. It is always a worry to shoot winter wedding when there is bad weather so everything was planned very carefully. Fortunately the only problems on the day was an accident just outside the hotel which blocked the road for a while.

It was a bright sunny day and the snow was still on the ground, so there was plenty of opportunity to go out an taken photographs of the bride and groom in the snow. Miles and Meera were wonderful and the whole wedding party were incredibly friendly and everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves. It's always fun to shoot a mixed wedding - in this case English/Hindu because both sides get to see something new.

The Hindu ceremony was held in the golf club, which has a wonderful conservatory style room with great light. You can see highlights of the wedding on the main Pixcellence site, and a draft album will be available in a couple of days. I will post more images here as they get processed.

Hindu Wedding Photography

Here is an image from a Hindu wedding I really enjoyed back in 2007. It show one of the big differences for a photographer working with Asian Weddings. Due to the size and complexity of the wedding ceremony, it is possible for the photographer to freely move around and even stand very close to the events (as long as you understand what you are doing).

This enables you to get a level of intimacy and details that is often impossible with a traditional English ceremony.

Wedding Photography Price List Change

One more (final) change to our price structure for 2009. These things tend to be a little volatile just after we do a big service revision and introduce a whole new range of products.

The last change is to our top end service package the 'Platinum Supreme'. Previously this had a starting price of arounf £2,500, but included two photographers. Many people have requested that they like the package but don't have the need for two photographers, so we reduced the starting price down to £1,950 which is a lot more affordable and should reach a lot more people. As always we do try to listen and provide as much flexibility as possible.

I am working on a new way of presenting highlights. The aim is to get a small selection of key images up on the site quickly for the bride, groom and wedding party to get a feel for the day in pictures. We will take 10/15 images and work with them to produce interpretations of the day and get these up on the site within 48 hours of the wedding. Here is a first attempt - admittedly it is being done from a wedding from last year - but you get the idea.

The actual show is in February - this was just a pre-show shoot - so look out for the real thing next month.

New approach for 2009

We are changing things around a little for our clients in 2009. The first change was done after we returned from Italy the other week from a meeting with our album suppliers. We re-wrote our services and prices guides to provide a broader scope of packages. People were asking for more flexibility and that is what we have done. We now can supply everything from a simple two hour shoot at a registry office to a multi-photographer, multi-day Asian wedding with several venues across the country.

The second phase is all about quality of service and added value. For each of our weddings and events in 2009 we will be creating a new style of wedding page for the bride a groom. We are introducing a notice board system (from Google Friend Connect) This is a very neat way of providing a social networking element to the wedding. Family and friends of the bride and groom can log-on and then post comments and messages to the bride and groom and to other guests. After the wedding, everyone can comment on the photographs and hopefully the feedback will allow us to improve our service going forward. It also allows potential new clients to see the type of feedback that we are receiving - good and bad - to better judge our service.

Thirdly our turn-around time for processing images is going to be cut. We already do things very efficiently and quickly, but it's going to get even better. the ideal is to get a highlight page of images up on website within 24 hours of the wedding and to get an first draft album design in place within a few days. Its a very ambitious plan but we feel that no-one else in the industry is able to offer this level of service and responsiveness.

We are very exited about the success we have had in 2008 and hope that these changes will build on this. As always, we are open to comments and suggestions on how to improve.

Wedding Albums - Asian Wedding Photography

The most popular wedding album is the digital storybook and there are some great examples of these on our gallery page. However people sometime forget that not everyone loves the digital style and it is still possible to produce a great album in storybook format with the more traditional layout. Here is one of our favourite weddings laid out as a traditional mat storybook. The complete album can be see on the gallery page.

Mat albums allow multiple images of different sizes and shapes to be presented on a page. Each image is an individual photographic print surrounded by it's own mat frame, in comparison to the digital storybook where each double page spread is a single print. For those who love the quality of a printed photograph - mat albums are the perfect way to represent a large wedding and are particularly effective where there are multiple ceremonies spread over several days as in a typical Asian wedding.
